A UX Design Study of Operational Console Devices for Effective Air Defense Operations

Abstract

This paper proposes a user experience(UX) design approach to improve the usability of weapon system operation consoles for effective air defense missions. Air defense environments are high-risk settings that require rapid response to real-time threats, where the speed and accuracy of operator decisions critically impact mission outcomes. To reflect these operational characteristics and domain-specific requirements, a user interview guideline was developed, followed by qualitative interviews and analysis. Based on the results, UX key-frames were designed to reflect user-centered insights, and UX policies were proposed to ensure design consistency and standardization. The findings demonstrate that user-centered design can be effectively implemented even within closed-network defense systems, contributing to improved cognitive efficiency and operational usability. Furthermore, this research is expected to provide a reference framework for establishing UX design standards in various high-risk operational environments.
