Abstract

This study presents an exploratory analysis of the spatiotemporal distribution of terrorism in Western Europe, aiming to derive policy-relevant insights for South Korea. Western Europe serves as a meaningful case study due to its socio-structural parallels with South Korea, including democratic governance, open-market economies, and increasingly multicultural environments. Utilizing the Global Terrorism Database (1970–2022), terrorism incidents were categorized by attack type (e.g., bombings, armed assaults) and analyzed using advanced spatial analytical tools, including QGIS, GeoDa, and the space-time permutation scanstatistic (STPSS) method implemented through SaTScan. This methodological approach enables the identification of terrorism hotspots and reveals the temporal evolution and geographic distribution of attacks. The findings highlight critical patterns that can inform the development of more effective counterterrorism strategies in South Korea by drawing lessons from Western Europe’s experiences. Despite inherent limitations and potential biases within the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), the study contributes valuable insights for terrorism prevention and spatial analysis.
